Kennedy seen on TV during mass« zeigt ein sehr helles Gesicht, das sich vom dunklen Schleier abhebt. 1319, 16-29	WQXR, die Stimme ... auch keiner was - Die NYT vom 9.6.1968 schreibt unter der Überschrift »TV: A Long Vigil Kept« über die Berichterstattung einzelner Medien zum Kennedy-Begräbnis. Dort heißt es auch: »WQXR, the radio station of the New York Times, at first included plugs for a bank and even for features in today’s issue of the Times. Later the Times management cancelled such discordant intrusions and with many other stations followed a formal of subdued music and news.« Dem selbstkritischen Absatz folgt ein Tadel für andere Radiosender wegen ihrer Ausstrahlung von Popmusik und Reklame. 1319, 38- 1321, 22	Gleich lagen sie ... der obersten Treppenstufe - Was die Fernsehübertragung zeigte, konnte unter der Überschrift »Thousands in Last Tribute to Kennedy, Service at Arlington is Held at Night« auch in der NYT vom 9.6.1968 nachgelesen werden: »But there were also others like Secretary General Thant of the United Nations; John Kenneth Galbraith, professor of economics at Harvard and former Ambassador to India; W. Averell Harriman, the chief United States negotiator at the Paris peace talks; Walter Reuther, president of the United Auto Workers; Robert Lowell, the poet; Harry Belafonte, Lauren Bacall, Sidney Poitier, Jack Paar and Cary Grant. [...] Others who shifted quickly back and forth around the coffin were [...] John McCone, former head of the Central Intelligence Agency. [...] At 9:55 A.M. the mass began as the clerical procession moved up the 400-foot central aisle. It was led by a crucifer carrying a tall golden cross. He was followed by white-clad seminarians, monks in brown habits, military chaplains, purple-vested monsignori, bishops in long violet robes and archbishops in purple and cardinals in bright scarlet. [...] A high point of the mass was the offertory procession by eight Kennedy children who marched in two’s up the sanctuary behind the two candle bearers to present the hosts and the wine used in the consecration of the mass. Another unusual feature was the playing of the slow movement from Gustav Mahler’s ‹Fifth Symphony› by 30 members of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Leonard Bernstein. [...] The mass ended with Cardinal Cushing performing the blessing of the body and the commendation of the soul. [...] The cardinal circling the coffin, sprinkling it with holy water - an ancient rite calling down God’s purifying mercy. Then he circled it again swinging a thurible, a metal container on chains filled with burning charcoal and incense - a ceremony symbolic of the prayers of the faithful rising to God. [...] The ceremony ended with Mr. Williams singing ‹The Battle Hymn of the Republic›, the choir’s Hallalujah chorus and the traditional funeral hymn ‹For all the Saints›. The coffin, still covered by the flag, was carried out of the cathedral by 13 pall bearers. [...] There was an unexplained delay in forming the cavalcade outside. For what seemed like five minutes, Mrs. John F. Kennedy stood in the bright sunlight on the top step, holding tight the hand of her son, John Jr. She stared rigidly across the avenue, but John looked around with interest, once gazing up to watch a plane pass overhead in the deep blue sky.«

Seine moralistische Tendenz verbirgt sich hinter geistvollem Witz und Sprachspielereien.
1320, 28	Fabianismus - Benannt nach dem römischen Feldherren Quintus Fabius Maximus Verrucosus, genannt Cunctator, der für sein taktisches Abwarten im Krieg gegen Hannibal berühmt geworden war. 1883/84 entstand die Fabian Society, eine von brit. Intellektuellen begründete soz. Vereinigung, die im Gegensatz zum Marxismus und seinem Klassenkampfgedanken den Sozialismus evolutionär verwirklichen wollte. Die Fabian Society war an der Gründung der Labour Party beteiligt und bekannte sich 1918 zu deren Programm. Zu ihr gehörten neben G.B. Shaw Sidney Webb, H.G. Wells und Ramsay McDonald.

1321, 29	ein Mann festgenommen - Auf dem Londoner Flughafen Heathrow wurde James Earl Ray (1928-23.4.1998) verhaftet, der später für den Mord an Martin Luther King (s.K. 928, 12) zu 99 Jahren Gefängnis verurteilt wurde, da man auf der Mordwaffe seine Fingerabdrücke fand. Der mehrfach vorbestrafte Gelegenheitsarbeiter hatte in Kreisen militanter Befürworter der Rassentrennung verkehrt, aber es konnte nicht geklärt werden, ob Ray, der sich erst schuldig bekannte und das Bekenntnis später widerrief, Hintermänner und Geldgeber für seine zweimonatige Flucht gehabt hatte. Seine Anträge für ein neues Verfahren wurden von der King-Familie und Jesse Jackson unterstützt, aber von den Behörden abgelehnt; vgl. NYT 8./9./10.6.1968.
