1335, 10-19 Aus London wird ... noch einmal bekräftigt - Unter der Überschrift »Soviet Intimidation Denied« heißt es in der NYT vom 10.6.1968: »London, Monday, June 10 - An article by a Soviet political commentator published by The Times of London today denied that the exercises ofWarsaw Pact staff officers being conducted on Czechoslovak soil were planned ›for the sake of a certain ›intimidation.‹‹
The article was signed by Vadim Ardatovsky, commentator of the Novosti press agency [...].
He wrote that staff exercises of this kind were conducted regularly and that there was no reason why they should not be held in Czechoslovakia, ›the leaders of which have time and again confirmed their loyalty to the Warsaw Treaty defense system.‹
He said that the exercises were scheduled six months ago and postponed«; s.K. 1222, 24-28.

Czechoslovak officials concede that they receive from the Soviet Union largely raw materials that Moscow could sell in the West for convertible currencies, while delivering to the Soviet Union manufactured goods that fall short of world market quality and are not favorable for convertible currencies.
Thus, the Russians were reported as saying, the current blateral [sic] trade pattern was tantamount to a Soviet hard-currency credit for Czechoslovakia.«
