Eugene J. McCarthy ... Verzögerung herbeigeschafft werden - Die Passage bezieht
sich auf zwei NYT-Artikel vom 10.2.1968 über den möglichen Einsatz atomarer
Waffen in Vietnam. In dem Text »White House Disputes McCarthy on
Atom Arms« geht es um die Verteidigung von Regierung und Verteidigungsministerium
gegenüber McCarthys Verdächtigungen: »The White House and
the Pentagon described as false and ridiculous today speculation that the military
had sought nuclear weapons for use in Vietnam and was stockpiling them
there.
Specifically the White House described as false and unfair to the armed forces
a statement, attributed to Senator Eugene J. McCarthy, that tactical weapons
had been requested for the war. Mr. McCarthy, a Minnesota Democrat,
said that he had not made such a statement.
George Christian, the White House press secretary, was asked whether President
Johnson had received a request from the Joint Chiefs of Staff to authorize
the use of nuclear weapons if it became necessary.
He said that Mr. Johnson had considered no such decision. [...] Today in
Miami he disputed a published account that quoted him as saying in Boston
yesterday that a request had been made for tactical nuclear weapons for use in
Vietnam and that he expected a renewed demand for them.
Mr. McCarthy told a reporter that he had been asked about such rumors and
that he had replied:
It wouldn’t surprise me if some generals had been asking for nuclear weapons.
[...] A tape recording of the Boston interview made by station WBZTV
showed this exchange between a reporter and Mr. McCarthy:
Questioner: Are you at all concerned that if there is a repetition of the events
in Vietnam of the last week that there will be a demand for use of tactical
nuclear weapons?
Mr. McCarthy: Well, I expected that there would be a demand for the use of
tactical nuclear weapons by someone. (Pause) As a matter of fact, there have
been some demands for their use already [...]. In a separate development,
The St. Louis Post-Despatch said in an article from Washington that reports
persisted that the United States has stockpiled tactical nuclear weapons in
South Vietnam for use if the Communists threaten to overrun the allied forces
at Khesanh. [...] High United States military officials asked about the Post-
Dispatch account described it as ridiculous. They said it would be utterly
foolish for the United States to stockpile nuclear weapons in such an unstable
environment as Vietnam.
If the United States ever wanted to use atomic weapons, these officials said,
the devices could be taken in with little delay.«
Darauf folgt ein Artikel mit der Überschrift »Query by Fulbright«: »Senator
J.W. Fulbright asked Secretary of State Dean Rusk today if he had any information
about a report that United States tactical nuclear weapons might have
been introduced into South Vietnam.
The Arkansas Democrat, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee,
sent Mr. Rusk a letter in which he said his inquiry arose from a closed
committee discussion of a report that a specialist on such weapons went to
South Vietnam last weekend.
The committee staff inquired of the Joint Atomic Energy Committee and was
told there was no substance to the report, an aide said«; s.K. 731, 4-8.
