The writers condemned the trial procedures and asserted that they evoked ›gloomy recollections‹ of Stalinist trials in the nineteen-thirties. Among the signers of the protest, according to a copy obtained today, were Konstantin Paustovsky, 75 years old, Vasily Aksyonov, 35, Veniamin Koverin, 65, and Pavel Antokolsky, 71.
The one-page typewritten document was addressed to Pemier [sic] Aleksei N. Kosygin, Leonid I. Brezhnev, the Soviet party chief, President Nikolai V. Podgorny and Roman A. Rudenko, the chief prosecutor. The four defendents were Aleksandr Ginzburg, Yuri Galanskov, Aleksei Dobrovolsky and Miss Vera Lushkova. The three men were sentenced to labor camps. Miss Lushkova has been released.«
