640, 29-34 Zwar war es ... für sich behalten - Die NYT berichtete am 25.1.1968 unter der Überschrift »A Spaceship Ruse Bared By Russians«: »A Soviet space scientist disclosed today that songs by a 110-member folk music choir were mirthfully chosen in 1961 for spaceship radio tests to avoid arousing rumors in the West that the Russians had put a man in orbit.« Dies geschah kurz vor Gagarins Flug. Die Wissenschaftler forderten, eine menschliche Stimme zu testen, fürchteten aber, eine Einzelstimme würde als erfolgreiche bemannte Raumfahrt interpretiert werden. »Then we decided we would record the Pyatnisky Choir since it was unlikely that Western reporters would go so far as to proclaim that the Russians had put an entire choir into orbit. The report from Moscow did recall a standing joke of the early space days, when the Soviet Union regularly launched much larger satellites than the United States which said that someday the Russians would put the entire Leningrad philharmonic into orbit for the propaganda advantage to be gained.«

Guilty of Disobeying; He Volunteers for Vietnam« der NYT vom 25.1.1968: »A young soldier who had refused to wear his Army uniform was given a quick courtmartial today, sentenced, fined and returned to active duty after volunteering for Vietnam service.
Pvt. Robert W. Meares, 19 years old, of Fayetteville, N.C., the reluctant soldier, pleaded guilty to willful disobedience. The court-martial sentenced him to confinement at hard labor for four months and assessed a fine of $68 a month for four months.
But the confinement sentence was suspended [...]. He must pay the fine.«

When she stepped out of the limousine two of the placard carriers held up signs reading: ›We support Eartha Kitt‹ and ›Hell no, don’t go‹. 642, 16-21 Eine junge Frau ... in den Slums - Vgl. den Artikel »Police Called Lax in Two Muggings«: »The young woman [...] said the mugger approached her after she had stepped into her building’s vestibule and started to open her mailbox. ›He came in and held a knife at my throat and said, ›Don’t make a sound.‹ He didn’t have a chance to say another word. I just screamed and screamed and screamed.‹ [...] As he ran after the mugger, Mr. McNichol [der Portier] said, he kept blowing his large brass whistle. 643, 3 Männer - Fehler in der gebundenen Ausgabe, in den nachfolgenden korrigiert in »Mädchen«. Der Fehler geht auf Johnson zurück, der den letzten Satz des Tageseintrags handschriftlich in die 1. Manuskriptfassung eingefügt hat, in die 2. Manuskriptfassung dann maschinenschriftlich übernommen. Johnson hat die Stelle in seinem gebundenen Exemplar handschriftlich berichtigt.
