950, 26-34 In der Zeitung ... um den Hals - Text zum Foto in der NYT vom 3.4.1968: »Czech Official Found Dead: The body of Dr. Jozef Brestansky, deputy president of Czechoslovakia’s Supreme Court, hanging from a tree near Babice, south of Prague, yesterday. Dr. Brestansky disappeared two days ago.«
Dr. Josef Břeštanský (28.1.1926-2.4.1968) war in Akten in Verbindung mit Rechtsbeugungen wiederholt auf den Namen Antonín Novotný gestoßen und hatte vom Innenministerium alle einschlägigen Geheimakten angefordert. Es stellte sich später heraus, daß Břeštanský selbst bei einem politischen Schauprozeß den Vorsitz geführt hatte; vgl. DER SPIEGEL 8.4.1968, S. 216 und 13.5.1968, S. 131 (Foto).

951, 4		 Präsident Johnson, der ... Meilen (322 Kilometer) - Am 31.3.68 hatte Johnson versprochen, keine Luftangriffe jenseits des 20. Breitengrads fliegen zu lassen. Der erwähnte Bombenangriff auf eine Eisenbahn und eine Radarstation bei Thanh Hoa fand 200 Meilen nördlich der entmilitarisierten Zone statt. Vgl. den Artikel »Fulbright Calls Move Misleading« der NYT vom 3.4.1968: »After the speech, United States planes struck targets about 205 miles north of the DMZ, including a radar site at Thanhhoa, 81 miles south of Hanoi.«
Vgl. den Kommentar der NYT »Straining Credibility« vom 3.4.1968: »Air attacks on North Vietnam in the past two days have blown a 200-mile gap in the credibility of President Johnson’s latest peace initiative.«

951, 5-8 Die Börse glaubte ... ächzen unter Verkaufsdruck - Vgl. den Artikel »Market Extends Rise Irregularly« der NYT vom 3.4.1968, dessen Zahlen von Uwe Johnsons abweichen: »The stock market extended Monday’s boisterous rally yesterday as prices rose in irregular fashion in heavy trading. [...] volume of the New York Stock Exchange subsided from Monday’s record of 17,73 million shares but still totaled 14,52 million shares, the sixth highest in exchange history. [...] Investors, however, apparently were still in a buying mood as a result of President Johnsons’s Sunday night announcement of a de-escalation in the Vietnam war. [...]
Golds stocks continued to retreat as gold prices declined again in European markets.«

951, 12-14 Hanoi macht Gespräche ... kriegerischer Handlungen überhaupt - Am 4.4.1968 veröffentlicht die NYT Hanois Antwort auf Johnsons Ankündigung, die Bombardierungen einzustellen: »The Government of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam has stated on many occasions: Talks between the Democratic Republic of Vietnam and the United States will begin as soon as the United States has proved that it has really stopped unconditionally the bombing raids and all other acts of war against the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.«
