The historical information system "Rostock around 1600" is a component of the sub-project C 2.
The database for this information system was created on the basis of the following publication: E. Münch (Editor): Das Rostocker Grundregister (1600-1820), 3 volumes. Rostock 1998. This publication contains two tax registers for the time around 1699 besides the land register. The here introduced information system records the data from around 1600. Additional information systems are planned for Rostock which will refer to later periods of time. The data table contains manifold information about the owners of the buildings. The following lists some examples: Last name, first name, general occupation, occupation subgroup, specification of occupation in the land register, political appointments, former and later property owners, building type, "Hunderster Pfennig 1594/95", "Schossveranlagung 1602/03", financial burden etc.

For the localization of the owners' signatures J.M. Tarnow's plan of Rostock (drawn 1780-1790, published: Rostock 1918) was used. This map contains the indicated plot boundaries and the owners' names. The data table of the historical information system "Rostock around 1600" contains approximately 50.000 data entries, that were visualised in a very user friendly way. With the help of the dialogue fields "Erster Beruf" ("First Occupation"), "Zweiter Beruf" ("Second Occupation"), "Steuer/Gebäude" ("Tax/Building"), "Weitere Themen" ("Other Topics") and "Themenkombinationen" ("Topic Combinations"), which were placed above the map, different topics can be displayed, i.e. general occupation, occupation subgroups, political appointments, (Hunderster Pfennig?), (Schossveranlagung?) and information about the buildings. The display of these topics is predefined. It is however possible to interactively visualise the subject matter of the data table, at which the form of the display can be determined by the user. It is possible to view verbal entries as well as quantitative information.

The special significance of the historical information system "Rostock around 1600" is mainly that it offers systematic information about urban-historical research for early periods of time. The historical information system "Rostock around 1600" was created in two versions. The complete version uses multimedia, it contains contemporary picture documents. This version was published on CD-ROM as a supplement to the second conference publication. The modified version that is published here does not contain multimedia elements. It is planned to publish this version later both in English and on the internet.

A further possibility to view the data of the information system "Rostock around 1600" is to interactively retrieve the data via an ArcIMS-Server.
